2014 Grade 9 Detective Activity

Question: How do we perceive beauty?
Jane Alexander - Oh Yes Girl.......

Disney's new Sofia princess

Discuss the 'beauty' you see here with your group.

Start by identifying visual clues and then discuss their meaning for example, Alexander's sculpture has very pale skin. Do you think this is due to that fact that she is sickly/tired/ has skin like a porcelain doll/ or that she thinks pale skin is more beautiful than tanned skin or that she never goes outside etc.

Now 'comment' (on this blog) on the types of Beauty that you see in these two faces. Find and interpret 5 aspects for each. OBSERVE carefully!

A chart method to help you think ......but please comment using full sentences, good spelling and punctuation. Explain what you mean so that I can understand you.

  1. Art work:
    Pic 1: Jane Alexander
Her curly black hair with her high hairline contrasts with her pale white skin and sunken features. Her eyes are closed taking even more colour from her face it also seems to make her facial expression peaceful and making her seem mysterious. The only colour that remains on her face is her deep red lips which stand out from her pale skin and black hair. Her neck is long which is sometimes beautiful in European and other countries. Her eyebrows are non-existent which might be to make her seem graceful and high class or have posture it also is seen by some as beautiful. Her collar of her dress is lace which is used in expensive clothing is sown into her neck as a possible symbol that she uses clothing and beauty tricks to try and make herself even more beautiful than she might have been before. Personally from looking at her I see a ghost of someone beautiful and what remains is falling apart.

    Pic2: Sofia

She is young with large blue innocent and cute eyes which portray her cute and childish beauty. Although she is young she is well taught in how to make herself pretty or beautiful with little things like the right shade of lipstick and perfectly shaped eyebrows. Her hair is short wavy, well kept, shiny and is a balanced brown hue which matches her pale violet dress. She wears a tiara and a necklace as a sign that she has wealth and is of royal decent. Her dress is designed to be wide and appear to have many layers underneath the visible clothing. When I look at this particular Disney princess I see a young child who has been raised in ultimate comfort and has never heard of the word poverty. Another thing I see in the child is that she has never had to worry about anything and therefore thinks nothing of dressing extravagantly every day. These judgements have been made without any visual evidence as I myself have never watched the program that this character or princess shows up in.

  2. Disney’s new Sofia princess
    • Disney has changed the original look of Sofia the princess, she was supposed to be a Latina princess with a darker skin tone and hair, Disney has perceived the “typical look” of a Disney princess. I feel that they have changed the look but it shouldn’t offend anybody because the image is beautiful both ways.
    • The image of Sofia has large, light blue eyes which come across as innocent and very approachable. I feel that this is still beautiful.
    • Princess Sofia has light hair as well as wears light colours (lavender) with lace, this comes across as very “ lady like” and “feminine” , which is what a princess should look and dress like.
    • Sofia the princess has slightly red (flushed) lips and cheeks which come across as subtle and not over powering, this also makes her face look lighter and brighter.
    • Instantly Princess Sofia looks beautiful and a role model to children who watch the show because she looks like a “typical” Disney princess which many little girls would like to be like. The image comes across as cute and loveable.

    Jane Alexander- Oh Yes Girl

    • I feel that the artist portrayed beauty in a very original way, in the Middle Ages it was thought to be beautiful to pluck your hair line back, to have a large forehead, but I say that in our time (now) it is not considered as beautiful.
    • The woman in the picture has very strong features (high cheek bones, a large nose and wide jaw) this is not always perceived as beautiful.
    • The picture looks like the woman has tried too hard to become beautiful and has altered her “original” beauty. In the picture there is lace sown onto her chest which I feel is a bit extreme, just to look beautiful. This shows that she has tried very hard to become beautiful.
    • The woman in the picture looks tired and that she has sunken in eyes which don’t look pleasing to the eye aswell as her red lips , the lips look dry and not beautiful, in my opinion
    • In the picture there is very visible bones on her neck, this makes her look sickly and unhappy, it is not considered as beautiful.

  3. Alexander’s Sculpture:
Some people might find a bigger forehead more attractive. Therefore she might have cut some of her hair off or worn a wig to show this type of beauty. Lace is a symbol of feminism. On her chest she has sewn lace into her skin trying to perceive beauty the way others see it. In the olden days pale skin was seen as a form of being attractive. She has pale skin, although sticking to olden day ways she looks quite unhealthy. Therefore showing that trying to fit in with society can harm the body. Her lips are red therefore showing that society has an image of makeup making her look more attractive. Hair is seen as a form of dignity and most women take pride in their hair and their self-esteem is wrapped up in it. Her curly hair is seen as beauty in modern society.

    Disney’s Sophia
Blue eyes are seen as beauty and are quite unusual; her big eyes make her look innocent. Sophia’s hair is short and curly with a light brown colour, which brings out the colour in her eyes. Her fair complexion shows her different race, which is actually a symbol of beauty in modern day times. Her dress and jewellery are accessories and these days such things make a woman feel confident and give a sense of feeling beautiful. Sophia has make up on, she has blush, making her cheeks stand out and her eyes seem more radiant.
