The return of the blogger....

I am currently writing up my Masters paper about our online learning experiments in South Africa at DGHS so I had a look at the stats on this blog. I was blown away! It made me realise that the purpose of this blog may have changed as I no longer teach art at DGHS but that the blog should not stop. I will start posting some more links soon! In terms of hosting content for my learners I have been working with intranet sites as they are easy to navigate, but I will continue sharing links here for the 69 followers :-).
Kind regards
Shelanna Sturgess

12VA: Test on theme: ‘South African artists influenced by African and/or indigenous art forms ’

Dear Grade 12's,
Some of you have not completed your infographics for this term. As result we will be writing an open book test in our double on Friday the 27th of March. If you handed in all your work for this term, then the test is not compulsory. However, I suggest you  still write the test as a practice on condensing work for exams and the results will be used to enhance your marks.

Below are the questions for your test...

Question 1 [10 marks] Unseen Analysis

Imagine yourself standing next to the sculpture above, which is situated in a gallery.

1.1 Discuss what you think the artwork’s concept is, using information from the title and various other visual clues. (2)

1.2. Discuss how the artist was inspired by Africa in creating this artwork. Make sure your analysis is based on :
-the elements and principles of art,
-the materials and techniques
-and imagery.  (6)

1.3 The sculpture evokes different emotions in the viewer. Discuss your own emotional responses to this sculpture and explain which specific visual clues evoked them. (2)

Question 2 [20 marks] Seen Artworks

You have studied various artworks that have focused on the forms and influences of Africa.  In a well-structured 2 page essay, explain how this influence is found in contemporary South African art. Choose AT LEAST TWO of your researched artworks as examples, although you could use three.
Consider the following guidelines in your discussion.
  • The names of the artworks and of the artists
  • The historical and geographical contexts of these examples
  • The influences from Africa and possible traditional meanings
  • The new meanings that your chosen artists have created.
Analysis of these works showing your understanding of the elements and principles of art/design used by the artists. (20)

12VA: Artists Inspired by African Art Forms

From Mrs Moore's blog...
Deborah Bell - Art influenced by Africa
For my Grade 12s ..........
Theme:
‘South African artists influenced by African and/or indigenous art forms ’

Deborah Bell's belief system places her very firmly in an African world view. She believes that she is part of those who have gone before.

She says of her images .....
"It is as if I made them before: as if I had been them before."

Her Journey Pot IV is a good example for this theme.

Journey Pot IV 1999

Link to my Nesta Nala infographic

- Nala is a traditional Zulu ceramic artist.

Construct your own infographic on this information, using the guidelines you learnt last year. You will need about 300 words divided into chunks. (+/- 5 chunks) You will also need extra diagrams and colour sketches.
Suggested chunks:

  • Illustrated Data
  • Intention about Africa & Influences from Africa
  • Materials and techniques of Africa
  • Some elements and principles emphasizing the African connection!
  • Symbolism influenced by Africa
You may like to answer these questions in your chunks.....
1.How does this pot improve the status of women?
2.Discuss the sacred and social nature of pots in South Africa.
3.How does this pot both recognize the past  and stand for the future?
4.How are these materials used?
Terracotta (kiln & pit fired);
Fat & wax; Charcoal; Wire; Graphite; Kiln cement

5.How does this differ from Nala’s use of some of these materials?
