Johannes Phokela: Art and Politics Grade 12 2013 Examples

 Johannes Phokela
Land of Cockaigne, 2000

Cockaigne is an imaginary place of extreme luxury and ease where physical comforts and pleasures are always immediately at hand and where the harshness of life does not exist”

Below are the exam questions you discussed on this piece

3.1
How does Johannes Phokela’s painting Land of Cockaigne, 2000, use humour to comment on the politicians of today?   Think of  both verbal and visual humour.  (2)

Exaggerates human figures to resemble the pig.
Play on the word ‘cocaine’.
Land of milk and honey (from the statues breasts)
Slice of ‘bacon’ from the pig – uses verbal puns a lot.
BUT .. The land looks barren!

3.2
Analyse the painting (i.e. discuss the elements and principles used) to show its power as a social/political commentary.  (4)
Renaissance type of landscape with illusions of form and space.

Strong colour in the background – gives a poster effect.

3.3
The composition plays an important part  in establishing the clarity of the message. Discuss how Phokela has managed this.
  (4)

Composition – central FA – very formal. Diagonal implied lines point towards the fountain.

Practical Requirements:

You will be supplied with the clay, but you need to collect your own container and reference images.
Your head must be small enough to fit into a cottage cheese size tub.

  • You will begin by modelling the basic form and then leave your clay to dry slightly.
  • When it is leather-hard you will begin carving in details using a 4H pencil and toothpicks.
  • You will then hollow out the base so that your head can stand on a pencil.

adjective
(of ceramic clay) moist but not sufficiently so to be plastic.

"I carved out and texturized the moss cape.  I looked around my studio for something that I could use for just the right texture, and found a nice old sturdy, crappy brush.  Perfect."-Maryanna Hoggatt

Please note Maryanna is using a slightly different technique to us, but you may want to see her process work at the link below: http://littlewolfblog.com/2014/01/08/animal-battle-sculpting-a-maquette/

Liberty Leading the People: Practical Activity: Gr 11VA

Complete an experiment based on Delacroix’s Paint technique.

  • Plot in the basic shapes using one or two acrylic colours on brown card,
  • Then add darker tones with pastels.  Use your finger and vaseline to blend in areas.
  • Then add outlines and some details using 6B pencils and more pastel layers to blend in areas.

I started with my clouds and some small building sketches

Now I am experimenting with adding a figure

I suggest you create an example based on the clouds in the background.

Below is an example of a current Durban artist's work based on clouds:

Brett Murray: The Spear: Art and Politics: Grade 12 2014

Below is Mrs Moore's Post on

Brett Murray

The theme of Art & Politics: Resistance Art is still relevant, especially regarding the role of censorship and the arts.

Remember - the theme is about images of POWER & RESISTANCE - not about morality and policing.

Murray based his painting on a historic poster of Lenin - a Russian dictator. Strangely enough - Zapiro then based his later satirical commentary on Murray's work - and so commentary carries on .......

Painting of The Spear - after modification

An historic poster of Lenin on which Murray based his work

Zapiro comment on Murray's work

How could you make an artwork go 'viral' to avoid censorship?
Read the arguments around this issue of censorship, and study the work itself.

Argue your point of view by creating an infographic about this work. Don't forget to consider the artistic merits by analysing the elements, principles and technical aspects.
Look at other Brett Murray works that reference political cartoons.
