William Kentridge is considered to be one of the leading artists in South Africa, and his work has brought him recognition around the world.
In an animated film dating from 1989, Kentridge paints Soho Ackstein, a man withinwhose power it lies to feed, or to starve, the poor of Johannesburg standing at his door .

"Kentridge has called his films "drawings for projection." For unlike most traditional animators, he does not make a separate image for each frame, but draws, erases and redraws in charcoal and pastel on the same sheet, shooting as he goes, to make whole sequences. Camera work and editing are minimal and elemental"
