Grade 10- Design Process

Begin by mindmapping various thoughts around your theme art as healing

Create three thumbnail sketches of jewellery you would like to make

Include the following notes with your drawings:
- techniques you will use
- materials you will use
- colours you have chosen

Once you have discussed these with me you will then create a sketch of your final design.  This drawing will be the most detialed and larger than your previous thumbnails.

Remember your theme is Art as Healing and begin designing with this in mind.

some examples of deisgn processes can be seen on Michelle Robyn's blog
for example her love for hydrangas inspired this piece

She was also inspired about 'Dis-arming' soldiers  this piece is called find a friend

"However I have found that writing the blog has really made a difference to how I see my work. I have found all sorts of connections within it – in fact WordPress is set up to make any connections easily apparent – I realise now that my work revolves around a few ideas that overlap and integrate – I had thought what I made was in separate compartments depending on the techniques/ outcomes involved.
Obviously this will only be apparent in a mature maker; but your students should be able to integrate their studies with their own lives, their likes, dislikes and comments are vital- it this is what makes creative design work connect beyond function – when the maker shines through the discipline.
I photograph my own studies/pieces then go searching for ways to connect them to the original sources – see Ongoing Work for this – the first post Burkha eyes. I also work into the sketch book as an ongoing discipline – in fact maybe I will start a sketchbook page on the blog – I have kept them since I was a student in the late 1960′s!!!!!!" An intriguing excerpt from Janet Haigh's blog....

In commenting on his work Hanson states that he's not duplicating reality, but making a statement about human values.  Another critic states that Hanson's sculptures document the unnoticed members of the working class. What do you think Hanson's work is about?

Discuss the following quiz questions with your group.

  1. The name and date of the artwork
  2. A short explanation of the artist's intention
  3. A consideration of the possible stereotype.
(Hint: What is the 'American Dream'?)
  4. A short summary of the materials and techniques used in the work.
  5. Don't forget the design impact of your infographic.
