Grade 9: Artist focus: Kentridge

Grade 9's


William Kentridge is considered to be one of the leading artists in South Africa, and his work has brought him recognition around the world.
In an animated film dating from 1989, Kentridge paints Soho Ackstein, a man withinwhose power it lies to feed, or to starve, the poor of Johannesburg standing at his door .

"Kentridge has called his films "drawings for projection." For unlike most traditional animators, he does not make a separate image for each frame, but draws, erases and redraws in charcoal and pastel on the same sheet, shooting as he goes, to make whole sequences. Camera work and editing are minimal and elemental"

Grade 8 work due and break down of exams



















Your exam is based on term 1 and 2 work
  • Beadwork history
  • Types of Beads
  • How does Monkeybiz benefit the commmunity?
  • How to create your own beadwork patterns/ projects
  • perspective (how to draw using the principles of perspective as well as the definitions)
  • viewpoints (low, high, eye-level)
  • how do viewpoints affect the viewer/our perception
Your practical work due is:
  • your pen and ink spheres
  • your bottle drawings
  • your classwork exercises (including your spot tests)
  • your positive and negative drawings
  • your upside down man drawing
  • extra marks will be awarded for any extra work done such as the shoe drawing
your work must be handed in in a flipfile or with a paper clip.

8M your due date for drawings is Tuesday the 5th of June.

8M Your drawing of a room (this drawing must include shading/ colour/ pen and ink techniques) is due on the 14 of June.
